Conflicts of Interest: Call to Action Guide

President-elect Trump’s business interests present an unprecedented potential for conflicts of interest and corruption under his presidency, and the only step he has taken so far-- promising to withdraw from direct management of the Trump Organization and allowing his children to manage it in his stead-- is completely insufficient in addressing these conflicts.

Senator Cardin has introduced a resolution in the Foreign Relations Committee that urges Trump to "convert his assets to simple, conflict-free holdings, adopt blind trusts, or take other equivalent measures, in order to ensure compliance with the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution."

Additionally, in the House of Representatives, Reps. Clark and Nadler have co-sponsored House Bill 6340 to require Trump to address his conflicts of interest. The bill is currently being considered by the House Judiciary Committee.

For calling your Congressional Representative:

(Note: Rep. Zoe Lofgren is on the House Judiciary Committee, so if she is your representative, ask her to support the bill in committee. For all other representatives, you will be asking for their future support of the bill. Feel free to modify the below script accordingly.)

Script: "Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent. I'm calling to express my strong concern about President-Elect Trump's many conflicts of interest. House Bill 6340 would require him to address these conflicts of interest. I strongly urge Representative [NAME] to support this bill."

For calling your Senator:

"My name is [NAME], and I am a California resident. I’m calling to urge Senator [NAME] to support Senator Cardin’s resolution to ensure that our president-elect’s foreign dealings do not violate the US Constitution. Trump’s financial dealings could pose a threat to our national security."

When contacting a representative with a DC office and a local office, it is generally more effective to contact them at their local office. (Look up your district here)

House Bill 6340: You can also call the House Judiciary Committee at (202) 225-3951 and use the same script as listed above. If you can't get through, call one of the Republicans on the committee and explain that the committee number is down.
